other retail positions don’t typically
demand previous sales experience.
“Retail isn’t very complicated,” admits
Brooks at the Eddie Bauer store. “We
want to be sure people have some
experience in working with the public,
but that can mean having worked
with people through communityservice
programs at school or
through other volunteer help.”
“We don’t even ask for a resume,
just a straightforward application and
interview,” says Bill Miller, marketing
supervisor for Napoli Group, owners
and operators of all the McDonald’s
in Chittenden County, which will
accept applications from kids as
young as 14 or 15.
Miller cites examples of his own
two sons, now in college, who keep
coming back to work at their local
McDonald’s. “They started when
they were 14 or 15, mostly during

when school is back in session.”
Drew Whitney is a journalist
whose fi rst job-for-hire included
a waitressing position at an
International House of Pancakes.
Throughout her teens she also
worked at a shoe store, ice cream
parlor, landscaping business,
jewelry shop and a leather-good
store in Burlington.
